After years of focusing on family commitments and navigating relocation, Nadia embarked on a journey to re-enter the workforce. Here, she shares her challenges, how counselling helped her, and the valuable lessons she learned along the way.
Q: What challenges did you face when re-entering the workforce?
After relocating back to Singapore after some time overseas, I started applying for jobs across both the private and public sectors. For six months, I faced constant rejections, which was incredibly frustrating and disheartening. It made me question the career choices I had made and the opportunities I missed due to family commitments. I found myself caught in a cycle of self-blame, grappling with thoughts of “what if” and “should I have,” which only added to my stress during this challenging period.
Q: What led you to seek counselling, and how did it help?
The frustration and self-doubt I experienced during the job application process made me realise I needed support. Counselling provided immense relief during this time, giving me a safe space to process my emotions and challenges.
Through the sessions, I learned to manage my frustrations and reframe my perspective. The guidance I received helped me shift from self-blame to self-improvement. It was instrumental in rebuilding my confidence and resilience during such a difficult time.
Q: What were some of the most valuable lessons you learned from counselling?
Counselling taught me the importance of self-compassion. I realised I needed to acknowledge my efforts rather than fixating on “what ifs.” I also learned to view rejections as opportunities for growth and to refine my strategies. These insights helped me stay motivated throughout my job search.
The experience underscored the value of perseverance and adaptability. I now feel better equipped to handle challenges with a balanced and positive outlook.
Q: What would you say to someone facing similar struggles?
I would encourage them to seek support and take things one step at a time. Self-compassion is key—acknowledge your efforts and trust the process. Challenges are opportunities for growth, and with the right support, it’s possible to rebuild your confidence and resilience.
Nadia’s journey reminds us of the power of seeking help, embracing self-compassion, and persevering through life’s challenges. Her story is a testament to the hope and transformation that can come from finding the right support during difficult times.
