Depression and anxiety had a profound impact on my life. The weight of constant sadness, overwhelming worry, and crippling fear made even the simplest of tasks seem insurmountable. However, with the help my counsellor, it slowly became possible to find relief and regain lost control. This is my personal journey of healing.

Depression and Anxiety’s grip on my life

Depression and anxiety had a significant impact on every aspect of my life. The constant feelings of sadness and worry made it difficult to enjoy the things I once loved. Simple tasks became overwhelming, and I often withdrew from social activities and isolated myself from loved ones. The physical and emotional exhaustion made it challenging to focus at work or maintain healthy relationships. Negative thoughts and self-doubt consumed my mind, trapping me in a cycle of despair. Just when it felt impossible to emerge from this darkness, I found hope.

How my counsellor helped me

My journey to recovery began when I sought help from EMCC and met Dawn, my appointed counsellor. There, I was provided with a safe and non-judgmental space where I felt heard, understood, and validated. I felt comfortable enough to explore my thoughts, emotions, and experiences during sessions and felt encouraged to share about the change I wanted to see for myself. It definitely took some time, but Dawn’s light-hearted way of treating depression and anxiety allowed me to finally address and deal with my struggles in a healthier manner.

Through this process, I developed greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and a stronger sense of self-worth, which were crucial in my journey towards healing.

Learning practical coping strategies and techniques

Something that I really appreciated from counselling was the variety of practical coping strategies that I was introduced to. It can be difficult to focus when negative thoughts and feelings creep in, so it really helped that I could fall back on grounding techniques or physical eye movements (which I later learnt was called Multichannel Eye Movement Integrations, or its cuter abbreviation: MEMI) to release the negative memories and replace them with more positive and realistic ones. These practical steps had a large impact on my recovery process.

My Final Thoughts

Depression and anxiety can feel like a suffocating darkness, but counselling can be the guiding light that leads you out of it. My experience with counselling was transformative and instrumental in helping me regain control over my life. I wish to assure readers that there is hope, and with the right support, you, too, can break free from the grip of your mental health struggles and embark on a path towards healing and recovery.
