The recent surge in retrenchment cases has been distressing, disappointing, and devastating. After journeying with many who’ve come to EMCC seeking help during unemployment, we understand how difficult losing your job, especially if it came unexpectedly, can be.
As a counselling centre, we believe that during times of uncertainty, prioritising mental health is paramount. Hence, when we heard about the latest retrenchment exercise at Lazada, we wanted to help.
Within EMCC’s capacity to assist those who are affected, we have begun extending free mental health support to help those navigating these challenging times. We are also working with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and Food, Drinks & Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) to lend support to the affected former employees of Lazada.
We reached out to work with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and Food, Drinks & Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) to lend support to the affected parties.
On 19 January, we attended the LazGather event organised by ex-Lazadians to offer support to the recently retrenched employees. The closed event helped to provide the attendees with a safe environment to share about their experiences and understand the kind of support that they needed during this period.
EMCC’s Senior Counsellor, Sapna, shared about EMCC’s offer to help stabilise the mental well being of those affected by the sudden retrenchment and encouraged the attendees to take up EMCC’s complimentary therapy support while they recover from the impact of the retrenchment exercise.
While speaking with some of the attendees, we gleaned that while many tried to approach their situation with optimism, they still struggled with indignance, uncertainty, and anxiety as they coped with the huge change in their lives. However, we were heartened to learn that they felt that the resources offered during the event came at a good time and would prove helpful in their journey forward.
After launching this initiative in mid-January, we have received interest for the complimentary therapy support, and some have started seeing our therapists this past week. If you or someone you know can benefit from this service, do sign up here.
If you’re interested in a more comprehensive resource, we also offer a complimentary LifeSkills Programme for those struggling with unemployment, which includes three components: Emotional Wellness, Job Search Advisory and Placement Support, and LifeSkills Training. We are here to listen and support you during this difficult season of life.
