Scaffold upon Level 1, the Level 2 clinical training further explores and expands on the professional clinical skills and techniques for working with couples During the three-day training, participants would learn to internalise and integrate the research-based Gottman Method Assessment and Intervention techniques through group role plays and active discussions in order to become more competent in using them.

Attain a Level 2 certificate of completion from The Gottman Institute once you complete the required assessment of knowledge at the end of each level.

Learning Outcomes 

Level 2: Assessment, Intervention, and Co-Morbidities  

In this two-day workshop, you will learn: 

  • To strengthen observational accuracy, clinical decision-making and expand repertoire of assessments and interventions across a wider range of couple presentations and co-morbidities.   

 

Syllabus outline: 

  • Describe the three qualities every therapist needs. 
  • Explain the basics of observation including why it’s important to recognize Emotions on the Human Face, Tension in the Voice, the Importance of Words and the use of the SPAFF coding system. 
  • Describe the seven levels of the Sound Relationship House theory. 
  • Describe how to recognise Bids and Turning Towards. 
  • Explain and demonstrate how to conduct an Oral History Interview. 
  • Assess a couple’s “Friendship Profile,” “Conflict Profile,” and “Shared Meanings Profile.” 
  • Explain and demonstrate how to use the 3 profiles to choose appropriate interventions for the couple. 
  • Describe the use of the core assessments with couples, including the Locke-Wallace, Weiss-Cerretto, Gottman Sound Relationship House Questionnaires, Gottman 19 Areas Checklist, EAQ, SCL-90, Detour Scales, CAGE, b-Mast, and Supplemental Assessments. 
  • Formulate a treatment plan and present it to the couple including using the Sound Relationship House model. 
  • Develop interventions that couples can use as antidotes to the “Four Horsemen.” 
  • Help couples to physiologically soothe when flooded. 
  • Select and implement interventions to help deal with conflict. 
  • Apply different modes of changing the “Attack/Defend System” in a couple’s interaction. 
  • Assist couples to establish dialogue about their gridlocked conflicts. 
  • Select and implement interventions to help couples deepen their “Friendship System” with Rituals of Connection. 
  • Select and implement interventions to help couples create a shared system of values and meaning. 
  • Use and describe the Stress-Reducing Conversation to minimize relapse. 
  • Identify and formulate a plan for different co-morbidities common to couples using Gottman Method Couples Therapy Assessment and Intervention. 
  • Describe how to apply Gottman Method Couples Therapy to a couple who has experienced an affair. 
  • Describe when it is appropriate and inappropriate to use Gottman Method Couples Therapy with a couple dealing with substance abuse. 
  • Describe the differences between situational and characterological domestic violence and when it is appropriate and inappropriate to use Gottman Method Couples Therapy with a couple dealing with domestic violence. 

 

At the end of the course: 

  • Receive a comprehensive 500+ page digital Level 2 Clinical Training Manual, allowing you to revisit and review the material at your own pace. 
  • Access online training videos by Drs John & Julie Gottman, including full lecture content and guided intervention demonstrations. 
  • Attain a Certificate of completion: Gottman Couples Therapy Level 2 Training.   
  • Clock CPD hours.  
  • Eligibility to advance to Gottman Couples Therapy Level 3 Training upon completion of Level 2.

Pre-requisites

  • Registrants signing up for the Level 2 workshop must have completed the Gottman Couples Therapy Level 1 workshop, which will be verified during registration.

Important points to note

  1. Your registration will not be confirmed until you have made full payment of your selected level/s within 14 days of your invoice date. We will release the spot if payment is not received on time.
  2. No online training videos by Drs John & Julie Gottman and digital manual(s) will be provided for refresher participants.

PROFESSIONAL CAPABILITY GRANT (PCG)

PCG funding is for eligible staff/volunteers from NCSS member Agencies and MSF-funded Agencies.

IMPORTANT: Please note that PCG funding spaces are limited.

 

Payment modes

After registration, you will receive an email with an attached invoice with more payment details. From there, you may choose to pay via Bank Transfer, Paypal, or cheque.

 

Cancellations and Refund policy

  1. Registration and Payment
  • Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. 
  • An invoice will be issued after registration. Full payment must be made within 14 days of the invoice date. 
  • If payment is not received within this period, the registration will be considered null and void, and the participant will be required to re-register. 
  • A confirmation email, together with the official receipt, will be issued once full payment has been received. 
  1. Cancellation by Participant
  • Once payment has been received, refunds are generally not available. 
  • In the event of serious or unexpected circumstances (e.g., medical emergencies), EMCC may, at its full discretion, consider offering a credit for use towards a future EMCC training. Supporting documents such as a medical certificate will be required. 
  • All credit arrangements are discretionary and evaluated on a case-by-case basis. 
  1. Cancellation by Organiser
  • The organiser reserves the right, at its sole and absolute discretion, to cancel the event without notice or reasons, and participants will be entitled to a full refund of the registration fee. 
  • Limitation of Liability: The organisation shall not be liable for any additional costs, expenses, or losses incurred by participants. 
  1. Substitute Attendance
  • In the event a registered participant is unable to attend, they may nominate a substitute (e.g. a colleague) to attend in their place. 
  • The substitute must meet the eligibility criteria for participation in the event, as determined by the organiser. 
  • The organiser must receive notification of the substitution at least seven (7) days prior to the workshop/training. 

Trish Purnell-Webb’s Biography

Trish Purnell-Webb is a Clinical Psychologist from Australia. She was the first person outside of North America to become a Certified Gottman Therapist, Advanced Clinical Trainer, and Consultant for the Gottman Institute. Trish has travelled to North America several times in the past 15 years to be trained directly by Drs John and Julie Gottman. And has been working with couples for over 25 years.

She is certified to present all three levels of the Gottman Method training sequence, as well as the Art & Science of Love Couple workshop.  Trish frequently presents Gottman Method trainings for clinicians throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and occasionally in North America.

Trish has also undertaken training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples, having completed an externship and all Core Skills training offered by the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, and integrates this into her work with couples.

Because of Trish’s expertise in couples therapy and clinical mental health disorders, especially Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Mood Disorder, Trish has been involved in the development and delivery of a number of couples programmes for Military veterans and First Responders and their families.

Trish has been in private practice on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia since 1997 and provides a range of services to members of the general public including couples therapy, intensive marathon couples therapy, online couples therapy, couples workshops, and is an active educator and speaker to many community and professional organisations.

As a presenter, Trish is regarded as an engaging, personable, and respectful speaker who is able to connect easily with her audiences and use every day examples and humour to illustrate her point to assist listeners’ understanding of concepts and ideas. Trish is regularly invited to make comment in media including print, radio, television, and is the first author of ‘365 Simple Ideas to Improve your Relationship’ written with her colleague, John Flanagan, in 2020.
