Rev Dr Tan Siang-Yang | Senior Professor of Clinical Psychology | Fuller Theological Seminary
Previously a native of Singapore, Siang Yang is now Senior Professor of Clinical Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary in California and Senior Pastor of First Evangelical Church Glendale. He is a licensed psychologist and Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He has published numerous articles and books, including major texts such as Counseling and Psychotherapy: A Christian Perspective. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Psychology and Christianity and serves or has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, Journal of Psychology and Theology, Christian Psychology: A Transdisciplinary Journal, and Journal of Spiritual Formation & Soul Care.

How do counsellors listen so actively and empathically to their clients? This two-hour workshop will sharpen your listening skills with sharing on actual methods used by professional counsellors, such as the SOLER listening stance, asking open-ended questions, paraphrasing and reflecting meaning, and make you aware of the pitfalls that prevent you from being effective in listening and helping others effectively. These skills will help you connect, understand and empathise with those you care about. Role play sessions which will help you practise listening skills will be included as part of this workshop. This is a skills-enhancing session led by the counselling team at EMCC to augment the Lay Helping and Counselling Skills | FWF210703 workshop to be held the next day.

Here is a chance to learn and build a biblical model for lay caring and counselling or people-helping. Learn five basic assumptions of human nature and 14 principles of effective lay helping and counselling. When and how should you make referrals for those needing more professional help? This 6-hour workshop will cover basic counselling skills to help people at different life stages, and briefly describe models for implementing lay caring and counselling ministries in a local church and pastoral context, eg, via informal, organised and formal, organised models.

What are the different causes and types of depression and mood disorders, including bipolar disorder, and suicide ideation. What are the ways to effectively cope or deal with depression? Growing Old Gracefully: Ageing and Maturing in Christ by Rev Dr Tan Siang Yang | FWF210710a | $50

For: Individuals struggling with ageing, and families with ageing members
Are you facing and struggling with ageing, or have a family member who is ageing? This three-hour workshop will cover growing old gracefully, and include the physical, psychological, familial, and spiritual aspects of ageing. How does one age and mature in Christ? How does one age with God’s grace and with meaning, whether as a single who has never married, or as someone who is single again through divorce or being widowed. This workshop will also help married couples and empty nesters to learn to live fulfilling lives in Christ. Time will be set aside for your questions to be addressed. This workshop is highly recommended for struggling families, individuals struggling with ageing and friends and leaders who may want to help.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for Anxiety and Depression by Rev Dr Tan Siang Yang | FWF210710b | $120

For: Pastors, church workers and leaders at all levels
How do you help those with anxiety problems, such as phobias or fears, obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD, social anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD, and depression including bipolar disorder? Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT that focuses on how our thoughts and behaviours affect our feelings will help. This three-hour workshop will introduce CBT and CBT interventions with an emphasis on building a warm, empathic, and genuine therapeutic relationship. A biblical perspective on CBT will also be provided that focuses on agape love, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, especially in the use of prayer and inner healing prayer and Scripture, and telling yourself the truth. This is a good start for those who are ministering without clinical training.
