Hope is at Hand: Beyond an Object

In this video, we introduce Anwar, a dedicated healthcare worker and family man who faced immense challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. After attending several counselling sessions, Anwar began to notice significant improvements in his mental well-being. Today, he is thriving, continuing to apply the coping strategies he learned, and navigating life with renewed strength and confidence.

Watch as Anwar explores a treasure chest – each item in the chest symbolises a part of his mental health journey and his current feelings. Join us to see what he picked and hear his story.

Through our subsidies scheme, Anwar was able to access counselling at a subsidised rate, which provided crucial support during a difficult time.

To help more people like Anwar, EMCC is aiming to raise a total of SGD288,000 through our Hope is at Hand campaign to provide some 530 individuals, couples, or families with subsidised counselling. To ensure that the counselling sessions lead to holistic recovery for our clients, a minimum of five sessions would often be encouraged.

Your donations to our Hope is at Hand campaign will help us continue providing subsidies for those in need of counselling support.

What is the Hope is at Hand Campaign About?

Mental health is a critical aspect of a person’s well-being. Mental disorders in individuals may have crippling effects on their personal and family lives. In families, we also see the destructive impact of mental health issues that may lead to the breakdown of marriages, behavioural problems with children, conflict situations, and a host of other relationship problems.

Many individuals struggle silently, lacking the resources or support to seek professional help. Stigma, financial constraints, and limited access to services often prevent people from seeking counselling. As a result, untreated mental health issues can escalate, which may lead to profound personal and societal issues.

Accessibility to timely and personalised counselling services is a lifeline for those grappling with emotional distress, ranging from trauma, stress-related issues, depression, anxiety and a host of other presenting issues.

Financial contributions to support subsidised counselling services impacts the lives of individuals, couples, and families – offering them hope and a path towards holistic healing.

Many of EMCC’s clients would not have been able to receive such help if not for the help of donors, which enables EMCC to provide subsidised counselling services to them.

On average, clients would require at least 5 counselling sessions for meaningful change to happen. However, this is rarely enough for them to reach their mental health goals.

We are aiming to raise a total of SGD288,000 to provide some 530 individuals, couples, or families with subsidised counselling. To ensure that the counselling sessions lead to holistic recovery for our clients, a minimum of five sessions would often be encouraged.

By supporting EMCC, you also play a pivotal role in breaking down barriers to mental health care and creating a supportive environment where people are empowered to seek the help they need.

STEPS FORWARD AND BACK: MY ONGOING JOURNEY WITH THERAPY AND LOSS

When Charlotte’s mother was diagnosed with late-stage brain cancer, no one saw it coming. Within months, her mother passed away, leaving Charlotte and her sister to grapple with the weight of grief. For Charlotte, who had been steadily bettering her mental health after years of seeing counsellors and clinical psychologists, this sudden loss was a big setback for her recovery.

“It’s like running a long marathon, falling into a deep hole, and having to start running again.”

Fortunately, Charlotte had an established therapeutic relationship with her counsellor at EMCC, who helped her through the darkest periods of her grief and loss. Though she had to deal with unexpected challenges along the way, counselling has helped her step back onto the road to recovery.

“A lot of my progress has been undone. But with counselling, I’m not back in the pit; I’m still making progress, even if it’s not where I want to be.”

MING’S STORY – DEATH OF MY BABY ALMOST DROVE ME TO SUICIDE

After suffering an ectopic pregnancy, Ming was consumed by inexplicable grief and pain. Thoughts of suicide crossed her mind as she looked out her room’s window – but at that moment, she miraculously received a message to seek help from EMCC. Ming took the first step on her road to recovery with EMCC that day.

ESCAPING SHADOWS: A JOURNEY FROM AVOIDANCE TO HEALING

“I’m so, so happy now. I should have done this sooner.” Katherine spent most of her life telling herself that nothing was wrong and that there was no need to seek help. But as she sought to help others, she also found healing along the way.
